"It had been twenty-five years since I went to Kabul. When I first visited the country in 1978, shortly before the Soviet invasion, life there was comparatively stable, and traveling around was easy. After the recent war, I wanted to see how the people were coping in the aftermath of loss and destruction. Traveling gave me the opportunity to visit and photograph places and institutions not normally were not available to visitors. I spent a lot of time photographing the children of Afghanistan as they represent the country's future. Throughout my life I have spent a lot of time with children - at homes, schools, and orphanages, as a friend, a Red Cross worker and a photographer. In Afghanistan I found the situation quite different from the way it was described in the US Media. I had the overwhelming feeling of sorrow for what had happened to these people and compassion for their situation. I also felt hope, a feeling that is reflected in my work."
