Najia Jalah, talented 17 year old photographer from Los Angeles spoke to Zaheda Ghani about inspiration and the black and white of taking pictures.

Why a photographer?

Naija: I have been taking pictures for about two years. My parents inspired me to be a photographer because I loved taking pictures of my grandfather before he passed away. I took classes at Pasadena City College, so it was a hobby for me but i wanted to learn more about it.

Black and white, or color?

Naija: I prefer to take black and white because they look classical and black and white gives you a chance to imagine the colours that are in the pictures.

Is there a theme in your work?

Naija: I really don't have a theme. I just love doing it. Most people who work to a theme are specialised in a certain area. I don't have a theme because i try to do a little bit of every thing.

What do you do besides taking pictures?

Naija: I am not a full-time photographer - I also go to High-School and in June I am going to go to Cal-State L.A for Business.

Words of wisdom?

Naija: For those who want to go in the field of photography - I hope you love it and enjoy it but if you don't it's not for you.

Favourite photographer?

Naija: My favourite photographer is Kyle Douglas. I like his work because he takes pictures of crime scenes. Pictures do speak more then a thousand words because every picture you look at you just imagine what the person is doing and what they were thinking at time.

Your own favourite work?

Naija: A favourite of my own shots is of a tree and the sunset. It tells a lot about how the sun reflects around us and the shadows give it a cool look. |
